My Senior Year Project

One and a Half Acre Development
By:
Travis Roberts
This is a screenshot of what I created.

At my high school, Kihei Public Charter School, Kihei, HI; seniors had the oppurtunity to embark on either a semester long or year long final project. Alot of our final grade was based around our senior project. We had the oppurtunity to pick thetopic which interested us and design a project around that. There was however one component which he had to follow, which was, how could your project relate to the community of Maui itself or of the South Maui area. It could also be used to help improve the community and the people within it. Since my passion in life is architecture, I decided to create a project on a piece of land in Kihei. There was one problem however, land is getting scarce in the Kihei area becuase of overdevelopment. So to overcome this fact I created a completely made up area of land in my model. I simply called it one and a half acres. If you were to measure my model it would equal to approximately one and a half acres.
This was my first major project dealing with the 3-D modeling program, Google Sketchup. My first attempt started off pretty good. I got through one quarter working with it. However towards the completion of it I found there were many things missing and the land usage of it was, lets just say not so good. There were also many glitches and technical problems with it which I just didn't have the time nor the patience to deal with it. So after one quarter had passed I decided to just start over again. The original design only consisted of one acre. There were still plenty of features which I would have wanted to include in the design. This is part pushed my decision to start over.

What is my project about?

This project features many things which I feel we need inside every community. The entire one and a half acres are used for mixed purposes. From residential to comercial buildings, as well as public spaces and public speaking forums, this area will have. There is even a devoted shopping area to help support some much needed jobs.

Conclusion

Overall I would say my project was a sucess. I was able to learn more about community planning and development as well as learn more about what I would want to do for the rest of my life after school. This is my passion, one that I will continue to improve on my entire life. When I had to present my project to the community, I recieved many acknoledgments in what we need in this community to help imporve the lives of all residents of Maui. I even recieved a award for this Sketchup model at the EAST Conference in Hot Springs, Arkansas in 2008. So for this I am proud of what I had created and showed to the community.

There are also many more components of this project which I had created, some of which include:
  • Floor Plans
  • Community Interviews
  • Community Feed Back
  • Hard Copy report of the project
  • Website
